Administrative/Biographical HistoryThe Keeping the Memory Victoria survivor testimony project began in Victoria, BC in 1986 at the suggestion of Congregation Emanu-El Rabbi Victor Reinstein. Author Rhoda Kaellis recorded, transcribed and edited testimony from fifteen Holocaust survivors living in Victoria, BC. These interviews were then compiled into a book entitled Keeping the Memory: Fifteen Eyewitness Accounts of Victoria Holocaust Survivors, published in 1991 by the Vancouver Holocaust Centre Society for Education and Remembrance and edited by Ronnie Tessler. The survivors interviewed were: Jack Gardner, Duifje Van Haren, Esther & Samuel Van Dam, William Jacobs, Zofia Preisman (no audiotape recording of Zofia Preisman, by her request), Kurt Weiss, Horst Rothfels, Edith & Henry Sitwell, Jannushka E. Jakoubovitch, Henri Hymans, Helene J., “Mrs. R.” and “Mr. I."
 
Scope & ContentCollection consists of records related to the recording and publication of Victoria Holocaust survivor testimony in Keeping the Memory: Fifteen Eyewitness Accounts of Victoria Holocaust Survivors, published in 1991 by the Vancouver Holocaust Centre Society for Education and Remembrance and edited by Ronnie Tessler. Collection consists of fifteen audio cassettes recorded by Rhoda Kaellis of interviews with fourteen Holocaust survivors living in Victoria, BC, and three folders of textual records related to the testimonies’ publication in book form.

Collection has been arranged into four series: Keeping the Memory survivor testimony audio recordings [1985], Keeping the Memory project file (1989–1992), Victoria documentation project original transcripts file [ca. 1990], and Publishing: Keeping the Memory file (1991–1993). 
 
Archival HistoryMaterials in collection were accumulated by the Vancouver Holocaust Centre Society for Education and Remembrance in their role as publisher of Keeping the Memory: Fifteen Eyewitness Accounts of Victoria Holocaust Survivors, published in 1991. Records likely transferred from the VHCS to the VHEC upon the Centre’s opening in 1994.
