Friedmann, Hans Georg (subject)
Summary"Hans Georg Friedmann was only [a] 10-year-old when he and his family, in 1938, were forced by the Nazis to move out of their home in Vienna. In the suburbs of the Austrian capital, they survived for two years during which Hans Georg wrote and illustrated 13 short stories, the adventures of detective Tom Lasker. In 1942, the family was deported to Theresienstadt. From there, in 1944, Hans Georg's mother and sister [were] deported and murdered in Auschwitz. He was to survive them only briefly: displaced, with his father, to the concentration camp of Dachau, he died in the Spring of 1945, aged 16. What remains from him are these short stories which were carefully kept by an old housemaid of the family who, after the war, returned them to a living relative... Hans Georg's imaginative writings, where good always prevailed over evil and where justice was the highest human value, contrast with the reality in which Jewish children lived in that time... [Hans Georg Friedmann], in the direst circumstances, affirms his freedom to write, think, feel and hope. An adolescent who does not relinquish his basic right to dream, imagine and create, even if it is in hiding." Batia Gilad, Educator, President International Korczak Association, Hans Georg Friedmann booklet, pages 20–22
