Summary"During the Occupation in France, thousands of children escaped deportation and extermination thanks to the extraordinary network of children's homes that the Œuvre de secours aux enfants (OSE) began organizing as early as 1938. These children, most of them extracted from French internment camps, were sheltered in the homes (the most famous being that of Izieu—the only one to be discovered by the Germans because of a denunciation), initiated into the clandestine world, and dispersed throughout France during the conflict. The homes were exceptional living and learning places that often seemed like vacation camps. Fourteen of them relive in this book, in the biographies of the educators and testimonies put together from the memories of those whose youth was formed there." —Back cover
